RSI Tip – Beware vibrations

Green leafAny vibrations which you will be in contact for longer period will make your condition worse. In some cases, vibrations are causing the problem alone. My friend had a summer job as gardener and she developed RSI from handling vibrating mower, so she needed to stop the job and problem dissappeared soon.

Also computer is a source for all king of different vibrations (from fan to the power source, CPU fan, HDD and DVD motors). You do not want these vibrations to come straight to your wrists. So make sure that:

  • You do not place your work station on the desk where you have your keyboard (put it on the floor)
  • Even if you have PC on the floor, arrange it in the open space or close to the wall, so that the case of your PC is not touching the desk at all.
  • If you must place it on the desk yet, at least place thick rubber pad under the PC case to reduce transfer of vibrations to your keyboard and forearms that may be resting on the desk now and then.

I have also found it pleasant to cover whole desk with thick cover, hanging a bit over the edge of the desk. This way the edge of the table is not cutting into your forearms when you lay them down (which would lead to limited blood flow and thus limited nutrition to your wrists and palms).
